What is childhood trauma?

Childhood trauma, relational trauma, and generational trauma is an event or series of events that left you feeling unloved, unprotected, and vulnerable at a time when you should have felt safe and secure. It can be abuse, neglect, or another mistreatment that happened when you were young and were still developing as a person.

Your experience

Your trauma may have looked like any of the following: physical abuse, verbal abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, teasing by peers, neglectful or overbearing parent, or a caregiver unable to provide what you needed. The trauma may have been caused by the actions of another person or even by a natural disaster such as a fire, flood, or earthquake. Regardless of the event(s), it left you feeling powerless. Childhood trauma may have happened only once in your life, but it can still have lasting effects on your mental health and well-being.

As an adult, the unresolved trauma presents as insecurity, self-abandonment, and self-judgment. We are plagued by feelings of unworthiness and fear of abandonment, which can lead to a lack of connection with others. As children, we didn’t have the cognitive ability to understand what was happening to us or why; therefore, we were unable to make sense of our experiences. Our work together allows you to unpack the past, heal from those events, and acquire useful tools that help you create your future.
